We cre­at­ed six beau­ti­ful­ly styled stu­dios with­in this tra­di­tion­al Lake­land prop­er­ty. The build­ing has deep links to cen­turies of local her­itage, hav­ing served as the for­mer head office for gen­er­a­tions of the Pat­tin­son fam­i­ly — respon­si­ble for shap­ing much of the built envi­ron­ment of the Lake Dis­trict since the six­teenth century.

Per­mit­ted devel­op­ment rights allowed the con­ver­sion of the build­ing from offices into six self-con­tained suites with unre­strict­ed occu­pan­cy. The open-plan lay­outs were care­ful­ly designed to accom­mo­date hol­i­day­mak­ers on extend­ed stays, pro­vid­ing all the com­forts of home with­in a com­pact 45 square metres.

To max­imise the building’s foot­print, the inter­nal stair­case was removed and replaced with a new exter­nal stair. The struc­ture was engi­neered with min­i­mal sup­port­ing posts; just two four-inch posts are anchored to the ground, with each four-storey flight cranked and self-supporting.
